The Old Pulteney 21 is sadly no more. But a few months ago, I was lucky enough to find a bottle at a local liquor store. It was the last one and for the old price as well. I have not tasted the 21 before, so you can imagine that I was very happy to find this bottle!
Actually, I have not tasted many whiskies of Old Pulteney in general. And the only Pulteney I’ve reviewed so far is the 12 year old, which I found to be a little dissapointing in the taste. But I’ve heard nothing but good things about this 21 year old, so let’s see wat it brings.
This Old Pulteney has matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry Wood Casks and is bottled at 46% ABV.
Old Pulteney 21 year old tasting notes:
Nose: Hmmm, very lovely! Fresh pineapple, followed by a sweetness from cotton candy and vanilla. Cinnamon. Also apple juice, almost like cider. The cotton candy still lingers. Then it becomes more fruity, with hints of red apples. Oatmeal and a hint of wood. Minerals too. It changes a lot, interesting.
Taste: Quite fruity. The red apples are dominant here, the pineapple is here too but more on the background. Oranges. Some vanilla here as well. Followed by some lovely winter spices, such as ginger, cinnamon and pepper.
Finish: The finish is mid-long. A hint of coffee, and again the red apples. The spices can be found here as well.
An interesting and very good whisky. With a nose that constantly changes, Love it! It’s a shame it is discontinued and a shame I haven’t discovered this whisky before. But hey, at least I had the chance of tasting it and there is still plenty left in the bottle, so I can certainly enjoy it a few more times.. Better not drink it too fast. 😉
