Time for another Caperdonich 1992! This one is bottled by Morrison & MacKay for the Càrn Mòr Celebration Of The Cask series.
The Caperdonich distillery, originally named Glen Grant no. 2, was built just across the road of Glen Grant. The distilllery operated between 1898 and 1902, and then again between 1965 and 2002. The idea was that this distillery would produce the same character as that of Glen Grant, but strangely enough this has never succeeded.
This Caperdonich has matured in a hogshead for 24 years and is bottled at 58,9% ABV.
Caperdonich 1992 tasting notes:
Nose: Honey and beehive, nice! Not extremely expressive though. Some green apples, pears and oranges. Then a faint hint of floral tones. Some herbs, but all very integrated. It is also leaning towards Maggi stock cubes. Ok, that’s a bit weird.
Taste: Wow, this is some sweet dram! Lots of honey. This is followed by a pinch of ginger and some oakiness. Later on also a few spices. Quite some black pepper here. It starts very sweet and nice but then turns a bit too much towards the spices.
Finish: Black pepper and honey. A faint hint of liquorice. Then it reminds me of some kind of candy, almost a candy stick at the carnaval. All covered in some serious spices.
It is better then a lot of other Caperdonich releases from 1992. At least the ones I tried. Nowhere near the 1972 vintages, but it does partly lives up to the expectations. A fine whisky I would say, although the spicy aspect can get very annoying at some point. Not a whisky to enjoy the whole evening. It is losing some points because of that.
