The Whisky Exchange recently released three new exclusives from Signatory Vintage and this Glenlivet 2007, which I’m reviewing today, is one of them, the other two a Mortlach 2008 and a Longmorn 2002 will be featured here soon too.
Personally, I’m not a big fan of the original Glenlivet bottlings, but lately, I have tasted some really nice releases from independent bottlers, Van Wees was one of them. This Dutch bottler has released a number of similar bottlings to this Glenlivet last year. Which is not entirely coincidental, because Van Wees buys its casks from Signatory.
Anyway, I’m interested to find out if this Glenlivet 2007 also matches the ones I’ve tasted of Van Wees in terms of flavour and character, so let’s go to the tasting notes and see if this is actually the case.
This Glenlivet has matured in a 1st fill sherry butt for 13 years and is bottled at hefty strength of 65.3% ABV. Cask no. 900243
Glenlivet 2007 tasting notes:
Nose: red berries and raisins. Milk chocolate. And some caramel fudge and toffee. Then blueberries and fresh prunes. Which is followed by cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg.
Taste: quite the sherry influence at first, with dried fruits such as dates and raisins. A hint of leather and dark chocolate. But toffee too. Then a hint of blueberries again and cherries. Vanilla as well though. Later also mint. Crushed black peppercorns, cinnamon and a little bit of oak.
Finish: mid-long to long with raisins, Leather, cacao and cinnamon.
Ok, it’s a sherry bomb alright, but like the other (VW) Glenlivets that I’ve tasted, it’s not just a sherry bomb, since the cask didn’t completely take over and the character of Glenlivet is still there to be found. Really nice.
