A few weeks ago I had a tasting with whiskies from Dufftown, a small town in Scotland in the Speyside area. The town is known for its distilleries like Glenfiddich, Mortlach and The Balvenie. Everyone had to bring a bottle and my contribution to the tasting was the Balvenie Caribbean Cask. Although everyone really liked this one, I wasn’t totally convinced about it and I needed to taste it again when back home. Now a few weeks later it’s time to taste it again.

The Balvenie Caribbean Cask has been matured in bourbon casks and finished in rum casks. It is 14 yo and bottled at 43% abv.

The Balvenie Caribbean Cask tasting notes:

Nose: At first it is very light on the nose, but then you get some fruity notes, like orange.  Also hints of raisins, honey and toffee. You can definitely smell the rum influences as well.

Taste: The taste is very sweet. There is some lovely milk chocolate, oranges again, cinnamon, honey and brown sugar, but also tropical fruit, mainly bananas.

Finish: The finish is mid long and has some sweet tones.

What do I think about it now? A tasteful and smooth whisky, but nothing special. If you are just started drinking whisky, than this is a lovely whisky for you.
