Another one of Cadenhead today! This time a Caperdonich 1977 with the impressive age of 35 years. A bottling from the small batch series.
Cadenhead is Scotland’s oldest independent bottler and maybe even the best, if you ask me. Established in 1842, they have plenty of experience in selecting casks, they guarantee that they never chill-filter or colour their whisky and they always offer good value for money! All this together is what makes them truly reliable, in my opinion.
This Caperdonich has matured in a ex-sherry butt for 35 years and is bottled at 50,2% ABV.
Caperdonich 1977 tasting notes:
Nose: A lot of sherry influences, like raisins and plums. Brown sugar. Red fruits. A hint of leather. And oranges too. It’s quite compact and well integrated, but it doesn’t really reveal much.
Taste: Dried fruits, raisins and plums. Blueberries and strawberries. Quite fruity in the beginning but then followed by a punch of spices! Quite a heavy punch actually. Dark chocolate can also be found here, which I like very much. 🙂
Finish: The finish is mid-long with hints of toffee and cacao beans, which makes it slightly bitter. In the background some sweetness of cane sugar.
It does not have much of the Caperdonich character, maybe just a little bit in the nose. This is probably due to the sherry influences. But the fact remains that it is a very good whisky. A real sherry bomb!
