A bowmore 1994 from Coopers Choice today. I was pleasantly surprised when I found this bottle a few months ago at a local liquor store. This 13 year old Bowmore (released in 2008) was for sale for €45,-,a very fair price if you ask me. That will probably still be more than its original price, but hey. So I bought the bottle, with the thought if this isn’t very good then it can always be used to make a highball during the summer.
This Bowmore has matured in a bourbon cask for 13 years and is bottled at 46% ABV.
Bowmore 1994 tasting notes:
Nose: Salty, sea breeze and a whiff of sea shells. Some brine and it has a bit of medicinal touch to it. This is followed by some wet rope. Then some honey and a very faint smell of white fruits. Maybe some ripe pears and tropical fruits. It’s something like mango or papaya but I can’t really get to that. It’s hidden but it’s there (come out, come out where ever you are…). It starts very interesting but doesn’t develop a lot after that. But still a pleasant surprise.
Taste: The taste is much more friendly, it is sweet almost too sweet. It’s bourbon style for sure. It has a thick mouthfeel. Quite good actually! It is almost waxy, and it has tropical fruits, but a bit different from the nose; pineapple (the fresh ones), some papaya and mango. A touch of bitterness.
Finish: The finish is mid-long and salty. A little bit of bitterness here as well and a sweet honey flavour. Some white pepper too.
Well, I really enjoyed this Bowmore. Too bad there was only 1 bottle left otherwise I would have gone back. It’s very good for the price I paid for it. It’s not overly complex, but it surely gives you enough pleasure. Sadly it didn’t last for long…
