Last Friday we closed the week with a 12 year old Irish whiskey and now we start the week with a Scottish single malt of the same age, the Glengoyne 12 year old. This Glengoyne is a whisky that I have always appreciated, but haven’t tasted for a long time. Interesting to go back and see what I think about it now.

Launched in 2009, it was the fourth single malt to be added to the core range. At that time it consisted of a 10, 17 and 21 year old Glengoyne. We now know that the 17 year old has been discontinued, but the core range has been further expanded over the years with a 15, 18, 25 year old single malt, a cask strength edition and then you also have a few special bottlings, such as the Legacy, which was launched last year, and a 30 year old. It’s quite a list, but everything Glengoyne brings out seems to be well received and it’s also a brand I like to go back to every now and then, with the 21 year old still being my all-time favourite of the range. 🙂

This Glengoyne has matured in refill oak,1st fill sherry & 1st fill bourbon and is bottled at 43% ABV.

Glengoyne 12 year old tasting notes:

Nose: a hint of dried fruits, sultana and figs. Lemons in the back. Plenty of honey and a lovely apple pie. Oranges. A little bit of toasted oak. Sweet cherries. Nougat. Later also pink grapefruit.

Taste: very Orangina (a kind of lemonade) at first. Vanilla and caramel. Milk chocolate and a hint of some lovely warming spices, mostly going towards black pepper and nutmeg. Nougat here too.

Finish: mid-long and Orangina again. A hint of sweet grapefruit and caramel.

In the nose I get more 1st fill sherry and in the taste it goes more towards the bourbon. Really a pleasant whisky, I forgot how nice this one actually is. The nose is really the best though as it is somewaht light on the palate, but the 43% works fine here. A lovely daily dram, which is very affordable too.

Bottle provided by De Monnik Dranken.
