Half a year ago I wrote the tasting notes for the Benriach 12 yo Sherrywood, which was quite good. But this is so far the only review I have written about a Benriach whisky. Therefore, let me go on to explore this brand, starting with the Benriach 16 year old.
This Benriach has matured in ex-bourbon casks and sherry casks and is bottled at 43% ABV.
Benriach 16 year old tasting notes:
Nose: It starts with a lot of sherry influences; raisins, and more dried fruit. Red fruit too, and then mainly strawberries. The nose is quite good actually. Some honey sweetness and vanilla. This all is followed by a little bit of ginger and cinnamon. Later also lime appears to the nose, and red apples too.
Taste: Dried fruit, but almost all the red fruit is gone. The red apples are still here. A few spices, like cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg. Some chocolate and caramel too. It ends with a hint of coffee, which gives it a bit of a bitter note, but not unpleasant.
Finish: The finish is mid-long and a little bit dry. Some sweetness from honey, combined with coffee and toffee.
A nice and easy going dram, nothing more but very enjoyable.
